Here is a snapshot of some of the projects I’ve undertaken or been involved with:

Written and visual communications

  • Managed communications efforts for organizations and programs, including developing printed materials (writing, editing, graphic design) and coordinating electronic communications (websites, e-newsletters, photography, videos and social media).
  • Developed content and designed wide range of marketing and informational materials: newsletters, websites, brochures, postcards, fliers, reports, forms, invitations, logos, presentations, display boards and signs, business cards, promotional items, HTML emails, fundraising, PSAs and advertisements.
  • Strong writing and superior proofreading skills.
  • Experienced user of Associated Press Stylebook.
  • Developed consistent visual identity and messaging across suite of materials for multiyear transportation project (Transportation Outlook 2040), including logo, website, presentation templates, publications, advertisements, meeting displays.
  • Served as organization photographer and managed digital assets.

Website and social media management

  • Maintained websites and calendars for various organizations, programs and projects.
  • Collaborated with technology staff and consultants to produce Web-based applications, mapping and public commenting tools. Sample: www.marc.org/tiger/tracker.asp
  • Created and curated social media content to engage supporters on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google+ platforms.

Project management and supervision

  • Worked with program staff, property landlord, sign vendor and city personnel to develop recycling center signage plan and secure municipal approval for installation.
  • Helped assemble multimillion-dollar federal grant application between many partners using Web-based file collaboration tool. Kansas City region (via the Mid-America Regional Council) was awarded $50 million transportation stimulus grant in February 2010.
  • Directed procurement process for $120,000, three-year videographer contract. Managed video series project that told the story of how transportation investments funded by a federal stimulus grant impact the region.
  • Several years of experience training and supervising both communications interns and lacrosse umpires.

Strategic communications and media relations

  • Helped identify and clarify communications needs, and refine key messages for multiple audiences (public, elected officials, community stakeholders, media). Advised staff and project partners on best strategies to achieve their goals.
  • Worked with media to promote coverage of agency initiatives and events. Prepared news releases. Responded to inquiries and facilitate interviews. Monitored and shared media coverage with staff.
  • Collaborated on and with internal and external committees on a variety of projects.
    • Provided ongoing communications expertise as a member of employee-driven wellness, innovations and core values/guiding principles committees.
    • Served on task team to revise bylaws and develop policies, procedures and expectations for public television station community advisory board. Recruitment efforts more than doubled board membership in spring 2011.

Public outreach and events

  • Supported successful special events through logistics, promotion and execution.
    • Largely responsible for planning and executing JobOne Recycling Services ribbon cutting and open house. Tasks included confirming speakers; developing event layout and agenda; coordinating refreshments, prize drawings and entertainment; creating collateral materials like brochures, fact sheets, invitations and display signs; partnering with city and chamber staff to invite local businesses and community members; arranging for staffing needs; handling event photography; and facilitating media coverage.
    • Helped organize and implement various meet-and-greet events and town-hall-style meetings for the purpose of friendraising.
  • Designed outreach campaigns to raise awareness and understanding of public policy issues.
  • Helped plan, carry out and assess effectiveness of public participation efforts for programs, studies and grants.
  • Planned outreach efforts that sparked broadest range of participation yet in developing long-range transportation plan for Kansas City region. Included interactive community discussions; surveys; online commenting tools; photo contest; “postcards to the future” kids activity; and innovative open-house events.
